Getting older is a privilege — and how we experience it isn't just luck or genetics. A surprising amount of healthy aging comes down to the small, repeatable choices we make every day.
I'm Dr. Eduardo Vargas, a family medicine physician at Golden Gate Health. September is National Healthy Aging Month, and it's a good reminder that you don't have to age on autopilot. Here are the everyday building blocks I talk through with patients — none of them dramatic, all of them powerful over time.
Keep Moving
Regular activity is one of the best investments you can make in your future self. Staying active helps preserve the things that keep you independent as the years go by:
- Balance to help prevent falls
- Bone density to keep your frame strong
You don't need an intense routine — consistent movement most days is what adds up.
Nourish and Hydrate
What's on your plate and in your glass fuels everything else. Aim for:
- Steady hydration throughout the day
Good nutrition and water support your skin, energy, and immune system, which all matter more as we age.
Take Care of Your Skin and Body
Your skin is your body's largest organ, and simple daily habits go a long way. Routine skin checks and everyday protection help guard against damage — and taking care of how you feel in your body supports your confidence, too.
Protect Your Mind and Your Connections
Healthy aging isn't only physical. Managing stress and staying socially connected help protect both your mood and your cognitive health. Time with people you care about is genuinely good medicine.
Don't Skip Preventive Care
Many of the conditions that affect us later in life are easiest to manage when they're caught early — often before you feel anything at all. Routine checkups and age-appropriate screenings are how we catch those changes when they're most treatable. If it's been a while, that's the place to start.
Prioritize Restorative Sleep
Sleep is when your body and mind do their most important repair work. Consistent, quality rest supports memory, mood, metabolism, and healing. Protecting your sleep is one of the most underrated things you can do for healthy aging.
Small Habits, Big Payoff
Healthy aging isn't about one big milestone or a perfect routine — it's daily practice. You don't have to change everything at once. Pick one building block, start there, and build from it.
